8.6.4 Ensure Patient’s Hand Is Closed

The veins become more prominent and easier to enter when the patient forms a fist. There must not be

vigorous hand exercise (“pumping”). Vigorous hand pumping can cause changes in the concentration of

certain analytes in the blood.
